Fans of legendary jazz icon Nina Simone haven’t been pleased for quite some time since it was revealed that actress Zoe Saldana was cast to play the late singer.
On Wednesday, the movie trailer for the highly anticipated film dropped which reignited the firestorm! Critics called bullsh*t on Saldana’s look which showcased darker skin and a prosthetic nose. What complicated matters even worse is when the estate of Nina commented directly to the Latina actress.
Earlier this week, Zoe simply tweeted a famous quote of Simone’s: “I’ll tell you what freedom is to me- No Fear… I mean really, no fear.” #NinaSimone”
The estate immediately shot back with, “Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.”

Ya know, I have to admit that I’m really torn behind all of this! While I completely applaud Zoe for landing the controversial role, because let’s face it….these are pretty big shoes to fill. Miss Simone was someone who fought tirelessly for black rights/isuues, was often ridiculed for the color of her skin and was even ostracized for all of the above….even to her detriment. It’s just unfortunate that Hollywood overlooked the many actresses who could’ve NAILED this role…..even without all of the makeup and prosthetic. Just goes to show us how out of touch they are surrounding stories that showcase people of color. But as the saying goes, “there’s no no BUSINESS like show BUSINESS.” It will always be about the mighty dollar!
